Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as an infant. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her mother the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art and theatre. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. In the same way, her mother was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her youth, however she was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was inspired to create a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one of the members of the jury as well as look through their trash. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at small production studios right after she graduated from school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
